I honestly don't think there's a right or wrong way of doing it; that's why anyone can learn how. just don't let your mind wander. Find something to focus on, like your breathing and ... lose yourself for a while. The time goes by really fast.

there isn't a wrong way, everyone I know has his/her own way. I just try to focus on breathing, and forget about everything for a while. try putting on some relaxing music. that might help you. it helps me everytime I play it

That's my problem, my mind doesn't shut up, so it's consistently wandering. Grrr!

Actually that's my problem too. Sometimes I wonder how I can make it so my mind can be quiet.

Good question. As soon as I figure it out, I'll be the first to let you know, promise! (smile) It really is difficult.

wherever you go, there you are by john cabat-zen.
Might wanna check the spelling.
I'm in an intro meditation class and that's the book he makes us read.
I've found that calming meditation music helps, something with natural sounds like water. He makes us sit up straight, but I'd get comfortable, but not in a position in which you'd fall asleep. Focus on the music and just breathe.
"Meditation is not a quiet mind" he tells us. Just recognize the thoughts, ignoledge that they're there and let them pass. If you have trouble, when you breathe out, say to yourself one. Not the number one, but the consept of unity one.
Lol, I sit in thiss class 50 minutes every monday and wwdnesday. If there's anything else I can parrot back, let me know!

There are tools to help you meditate
But the easiest one is calm and relaxing music.
Sounds of nature, with water sounds such as ocean waves, or a babbling brook.
You can even try binaural beats.
Essentially, what you are attempting to achieve is an alpha state of mind.
In this state, you are pushing your brain down to about a 9 cycle per second frequency.

1. Wearing loose clothing, tight clothing can definitely become a distraction.
2. Find somewhere quiet at first. More advance people can meditate almost anywhere, but beginners needs somewhere where there is little to no noise.
3. Turn off your phone and go to a place where you know no one will be walking in anytime soon and require your attention. Nothing more frustrating than getting close to that stage, or enjoying that stage and being jult back by the ringing of a cellphone. Or by someone calling your name.
4. Try not to drink a lot of water before the session. You can imagine why.
5. Try not to do this after a huge meal, as you will find yourself heading towards theta and soon delta sending you off to la la land.
6. Try to refrain from doing this totally laying down, as you will find yourself often sleeping rather than meditating. Either sit straight, or slightly reclined.
7. There are 2 ways of performing this. Either focus on one thing, like breathing like others have stated above, or you can let images just simply flow through your mind; also by another who have already stated. The second one can be distracting as you may find yourself thinking of things that may stress you out. I like to focus on something, either my breathing, the waves of the ocean, fluffy clouds, a steady flowing stream, the scenery of a spring day in a lovely forest, etc. The idea is to form and hold on to a peaceful and lovely image.

In closing, I must reiterate that if you are wanting to meditate, do not let yourself go past the alpha state. Theta and even delta are used for other stuff like OBE, astral projections, and remote viewing. Unless of course thats an adventure you wish to embark upon.
